This is just one example of the many projects that this program benefits. The inmates have painstakingly been cleaning bricks, scraping off old mortar for reuse in the restoration project. Since mid-August of 2004, officers have been taking a crew composed of approximately 10 Jail Industries inmates, four times a week to contribute to this project. One of the projects that this program has been heavily involved in is the restoration effort of the old Nueces county Courthouse. These agencies include the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, The Salvation Army, Special Olympics, the Women's shelter, and numerous youth sports leagues. Court-ordered community service participants are also used in providing services to these non-profit agencies. This option is offered to low-risk inmates as a way of reducing jail time and giving back to the community. The Alternative Incarcerations/Jail Industries Program currently serves approximately 168 Coastal Bend non-profit agencies by providing labor and other needed services.
